What exactly is a “knot” in the muscle?

Muscle knots or myofascial trigger points are areas of hyperirritable muscle tissue that can be felt as small, palpable nodules. These knots are formed when muscle fibers contract and do not release, causing the muscle to tighten and form a localized knot that can cause referred pain or discomfort in other areas of the body. Think of a tangled fishing net!

How trigger points create pain in the body

This contraction of the muscle can cause the surrounding tissue to become tight and reduce blood flow to the area, leading to the buildup of toxins and deprive the tissue of oxygen and nutrients, disrupting the healing process and increasing the risk of tissue damage. The buildup of toxins can further irritate the surrounding nerves, intensifying pain and discomfort. This cycle of tension and pain can result in the trigger point becoming even more pronounced over time.

In order for muscles to function properly, they must receive sufficient nutrients, blood flow, and oxygen. Muscle tissue is maintained in a healthy environment by this process.

What could be causing the muscle knots in your body

Other factors that contribute to the development of trigger points include poor posture, muscle imbalances, stress, lack of exercise, and inadequate rest and recovery. This can increase muscle tension and restrict blood flow, creating an environment where trigger points are more likely to form. Therefore, maintaining a balanced lifestyle that includes regular exercise, proper ergonomics, and stress management is key to preventing trigger point development. Some common repetitive movements that can cause trigger points include typing on a keyboard for long hours, performing repetitive motions in sports such as tennis or golf, and using tools that require repetitive gripping and twisting motions, such as screwdrivers or paintbrushes. It is important to be mindful of these activities and take breaks or adjust ergonomics to avoid trigger point development optimal muscular health.

How Acupuncture can treat trigger points to alleviate muscular pain

Acupuncture is widely recognized for its effectiveness in pain management treatments because of the unique ability to insert fine needles at the exact location of muscle knots, motor points, and scar tissue to promote blood flow and release endorphins.

Overall, acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment option for those suffering from trigger point-related muscle pain. Numerous studies have shown that acupuncture is not only effective for muscle pain but also for various other types of pain, such as migraines, osteoarthritis, and chronic back pain.
